For 40 years the little settlement around the State Agriculture School in Centre County had been "the town with no name." Around 1900, a controversy began over choosing a name for the town. Instead of choosing a name honoring prominent citizens, the majority chose to continue calling the town after the college as had been done in the past. So it remained State College and continues as such today, home of the Pennsylvania State University. State College is one of the best places to live, learn, work and relax. State College's vibrant downtown lies at the heart of the town-and-gown community. Offering many different neighborhoods to chose from, you'll be sure to find one that fits your needs. Welcome to Happy Valley!
