As I continue to meet new people in Centre County, and they discover that I’m a Realtor, the same question always comes up. “What’s the Market like? Are you still selling homes?” My answer is almost always the same whether it’s spring, summer, fall or winter. “We are doing great! We are really busy and homes are still selling.”
We are lucky in a number of ways, but the #1 reason our market is so strong is our association with Penn State. As a university community, we benefit in a huge way. Real Estate is a local market. When you have a popular university driving the real estate market, our property values go up. How did we get our nickname, “Happy Valley?” It was during the Great Depression. When everyone else was losing their homes and standing in bread lines, we continued to prosper. Happy Valley is one of the top 10 most recession proof cities in the US. It’s also one of the top retirement areas, and all because we are lucky enough to live in an awesome university town.
Next time you get irritated with student running across the road and making a ruckus downtown, try not to get irritated. If you are a homeowner, you need to thank them. If it weren’t for them, you might not be living in Happy Valley!
