Want lower property taxes but unwilling to sacrifice your child's education? Then look no further than the Bald Eagle Area School District, just north of State College and northwest of Bellefonte. While the district may geographically be the largest located entirely within Centre County, you'd never know based on the tight-knit group of students, educators, parents and volunteers who form the "BEA family."
At 342.6 square miles, this rural district encompasses the boroughs of Howard, Milesburg, Port Matilda, Snow Shoe and Unionville, and the townships of Boggs, Burnside, Howard, Huston, Snow Shoe, Union and Worth. According to 2010 census data, the district served a resident population of 13,218. During the 2009-10 school year, the district had over 1,516 students with 134 teachers, 60 support staff and 12 administrators. Five school buildings are in use; a junior/senior high school, and four elementary schools.
Despite its rural location, the district prides itself in its implementation of new and exciting educational initiatives. In addition to a wide range of standard curriculum, the district offers a variety of programs and services to help students with unique educational needs. One such program, the Bald Eagle Area Cyber Academy, offers students at-home schooling, while still allowing them access to the many classes, clubs and athletic opportunities the district offers. This experience-driven program allows for a greater breadth of learning experiences for those who may have special educational needs or require a flexible daily schedule.
Another perk this district offers is dual enrollment. The program allows high school students to take courses at regional higher education institutes and earn credit for those class hours. Sophomores, junior and seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 can earn credits at the Clarion State University of Pennsylvania or the California State University of Pennsylvania.
Students can also expand their education through vocational training at the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology (CPI). CPI offers a wide range of disciplines and certificate programs for high school and adult learners. Work release and work study programs are also available.
In addition to these educational initiatives, students are benefited by the district's association with Central Intermediate Unit #10. They provide the district with a wide variety of services including specialized education for disabled students, training on recognizing child abuse, speech and disability services, and more.
Opportunities for learning occur on the athletic field, too. Bald Eagle Area holds their coaches to a high standard in the classroom and in life, believing that these leaders are constantly setting an example for young athletes. The district also recognizes the importance of athletic events in creating an environment conducive to community pride and positive school morale.
