First Night State College - Ring in 2023!

As 2022 comes to a close, the new year approaches with high hopes, resolutions and a fresh start. What better way to spend New Year’s Eve than with family and friends, celebrating in this wonderful town we call “home?” The ever popular First Night State College event is this Saturday, December 31st from noon until 11pm – so bundle up and enjoy the festivities!

Go back in time with a horse drawn carriage ride for $5. Rides require a First Night Button and are offered on a first come, first served basis from 6:30 - 8:30pm. Oh, what fun!! At Sidney Friedman Park, you can also check out the two reindeer (known as caribou) from Spruce Run Farm in Bloomsburg, PA. Visit the majestic reindeer any time between 4 – 8pm!

Along the 100 block of Allen Street, Sidney Friedman Park, the Municipal Building Plaza, and area business sponsors and churches; you will find an array of beautifully crafted ice sculptures. This year, over 80 blocks of ice will be carved into beasts, people and monuments (that’s over 10 tons of ice)! Take some photos before they’re gone! You can enjoy the One Block Ice Sculpture Exhibit from 10am - 11pm and be sure to check out our sculptures – #48 and #26 (sponsored by Carrie Miller of KBB)!

Next, take part in the 5K Resolution Run on a course around the streets of Penn State Campus, beginning and finishing on College Avenue! Run (or fast walk) your way or cheer them on from the sidelines! This year’s Resolution Run is sponsored by Mount Nittany Health and the race begins at 6:30pm. Wear a costume and get in on the excitement!

But wait – there’s more! See a multitude of acts, music, comedy skits and dance performances at select times throughout the day/night and participate in various workshops for kids and adults alike…there’s truly so much to do!

Many of these events are free, however, some do require a First Night Button – available at select downtown merchants and performance venues. (see the link below for a list of where to purchase)
