The Highlands is a part of the Holmes-Foster/Highlands National Register Historic District in the State College Borough and boasts the architectural heritage of the area. With a variety of residences, you'll find single family homes, fraternity houses and highrise apartment buildings along with some small businesses.
During the years 1925-1933, up to 20 big homes and fraternity mansions were built on large lots. These homes ranged from 7,000 - 15,000 square feet. Homes during this time began to model the European-style of architecture rather than the Victorian era. Several companies were also offering mail-order houses to residents in State College with a multitude of chooses from their catalogs.
The Highlands Neighborhood Walking Tour is one of three residential tours in the area. You can read more about the Walking Tour and The Highlands Historic District here.
