In 1793 by direction of Colonel Samuel Miles of Philadelphia, the town plan of Milesburg was survyed. This was the site of an Indian Village known as "Bald Eagle's Nest", having been the home of Indian Chief Bald Eagle. On March 13, 1797 the first post office in the territory of Centre County was opened in Milesburg. In 1822 the Erie Turnpike was completed from Milesburg over the Allegheny Mountains, 1847 the Bald Eagle Canal opened to Milesburg and in 1843 Milesburg was incorporated as a Borough. The Bald Eagle Valley railroad was completed in 1864 and after the flood in 1865 the canal was abandoned.
When visiting Milesburg today be sure and visit the monument dedicated to all the World War II veterans on the town square and try a Miller's Haogie, they're great. Housing in Milesburg, charming older homes in town or you can check out the Confer Develpoment. A convienent location just a few miles from Bellefonte and a short drive to Pleasant Gap, Unionville, State College, Tyrone and Lamar. Best of all Milesburg, at the junction of Routes #150 and #220, is just down the road from Howard Borough and the wonder Bald Eagle State Park. See if you can spot the nesting Bald Eagles.
